John Brown: Traitor or Martyr?
WHAT: Aided by private encouragement and financial aid from eastern abolitionists, John Brown made plans to seize a fortress in Virginia from which he hoped a slave insurrection would form. His raid was besieged by local militias and U.S. troops. He and others were tried for treason and hung, if they hadn't been killed at the raid.
WHEN: Oct. 16th, 1859
WHERE: Virginia
WHO: The main key figure of this concept was John Brown, the antislavery zealot. However, the reaction from not just one figure but a large group of white southerners is also important to note. They assumed Brown to be a representation of the North as a whole, making them feel like they had to be on the defensive.
WHY: It's place in history is that without this event white southerners may never have felt the need to cede from the Union. The Harper's Ferry raid unsettled them more than any other slave rebellion did.
SIGNIFICANCE: The main idea of the raid was that John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry was the event that most impacted white southerners and convinced them they could no longer live safely in the Union. The raid also caused animosity toward the Republican party who the southerners believed supported the raid leading them to assume that the North was now committed to as lave insurrect ion.

WHAT: Lincoln's election was the first election where the Republican party participated, and subsequently won by popular/electoral vote.
WHEN: 1860
WHERE: U.S. (sectional split btwn North and South important)
WHO: The key figure of this concept was Abraham Lincoln. The first republican president, he was focused on holding the union together, and would finally try to fix what had been boiling in the country for so many years. Many southerners disliked him, and none of the South's electoral votes went to him. When he won, they felt like their voice was being suppressed by the North, and would no longer have any of it.
WHY: It's place in history is that it began the long process of disunion between North and South, white southerners knew their position in the Union was hopeless. THE SOUTH SECEDED BECAUSE HE WON. They still had power in both of the houses, but they figured this worthless if a president could be voted without their say. So, they wanted a say, and would begin to secede from the union.
SIGNIFICANCE: The main idea of the Lincoln election is that it began the process of disunion of the South from the Union, a process that would lead to the Civil War.
